Staszak Outstanding Educator of the Year Award
Congratulations to the 2025 Staszak Educators of the Year:
Kara Sakellaris and Nick Sakellaris
We are thrilled to announce that Irving Elementary teachers Kara Sakellaris and Nick Sakellaris have been named the 2025 recipients of the Staszak Educator of the Year Award. This annual honor recognizes a D97 educator who demonstrates exceptional dedication and service to students. The award celebrates the legacy of William Staszak and his commitment to the Oak Park community.
On May 21st, OPEF, D97 Administration and the Irving community surprised Kara and Nick with the award. Students joined in the celebration with a festive clap-out through the halls of Irving. The brother and sister in-law duo was recognized for their years of time, energy and unwavering commitment to Oak Park and District 97.
Their passion for creating inspiring and meaningful learning experiences—both in and out of the classroom—is evident in everything they do. From organizing the Irving Sleepover and PTO fundraisers to coaching youth sports and leading early morning reading programs, their impact is far-reaching.
Community members expressed enthusiastic support for Kara and Nick during the Staszak Award nomination:
“Kara is a long-tenured fourth grade teacher who still finds the time to commit several weekends to the school. In the classroom, Ms. Sak is just as extraordinary, always finding ways to keep her students engaged. They made mini-pies for “Pi Day,” played cooperative team games to burn off energy during MAP testing, and have spent many hours working with the multi-needs classroom.”
“For 29 years, Mr. Sak has devoted his all to supporting the climate and culture at Irving. Need a volunteer for the opera program? He’s there in his size 13 high heels. Irving Sleepover? He’s on patrol all night. Pie in the face? He’s your man. Fundraisers? Yes. He is a consistent presence at recess.”
